Boost Your Bio: How to make a great first impression on Instagram
Steph Barclay is the founder of High Weald Marketing and your social media mentor for small creative businesses. She makes sure your social media is your digital shop window, and cuts through the noise. Steph is located in Tunbridge Wells, but serves Kent, Sussex and beyond.
Small craft businesses and Instagram are a match made in heaven! The platform is incredibly visual, so your wares will fit right in.
“But how do I attract the right people for the products I sell?” I hear you ask. Well, this is where your Instagram bio comes in. This is the space to show your ideal customers what you sell, why it’s right for them and how they can get their hands on all these goodies.
Here’s a few top tips to make the best of this space, plus a sneaky extra!
Name
These days, people are searching on Instagram like they search on Google. This means you need to describe what you do in this box, and if you don’t have your name in your Instagram handle, add this in too. I’ll use myself as an example – my Instagram handle is @highwealdmarketing and in the Name box I’ve put Steph . Social media audits & Canva templates . Kent and Sussex
Bio
This is where you need to say what it is you do, and who you do it for. The aim is to attract the right people to your page, and ultimately buy your products, so if somebody reads your bio and decides you’re not right for them, that’s OK. Here, I’ll use my good friend Jo (@thegrammarmamma) as an example – her bio tells me that “✍️ I help parent-facing businesses reach more potential customers by creating empathetic content for their websites, blogs, social media and emails.”
Links
You can add up to five links to your bio, so if you have a website or online shop, this is the space to add them. If you have a contact form on your website, this is another idea for a link to add, along with the website for the next fayre you’re attending or how to sign up for your newsletter.
And that little extra I promised you?
Have you heard about Instagram highlights? These are the little circles under your bio. You have such limited space in your bio, that this is a golden opportunity to say even more about what you can do for us and the problem you solve!
The way to create highlights, is to make an Instagram story and just before you post it, there will be an option to add the story to highlights. Think about sets of highlights that really show you off – about you, testimonials, behind the scenes and top tips would all be great ones to choose.
And that’s it! You’re all set to create a barnstorming bio and bring your dream audience to you.
If you’d like to work together on getting under the bonnet of your social media, I’d love to hear from you. I can audit your social media platforms to see where you are now and where you’d like to get to. I’ll provide you with an easy to understand report of actions to work through, plus plenty of content ideas. I can also create social media templates in your brand, where all you need to do is drop in an image and testimonial, tip or quote.
I’m all about making your life easier, and giving you more time to do the fun stuff!
